The lab is directed by Dr. Jee Eun Sung,

a professor in the Department of Communication Disorders

and an adjunct professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at Ewha Womans University.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • Neurogenic communication disorders, including aphasia, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia

  • Aging-related changes in language and cognition

  • Sentence processing across typologically diverse languages

  • Cognitive-linguistic assessment and treatment using behavioral, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging methods (e.g., ERP, eye-tracking, fNIRS, taVNS, fMRI)

  • Cross-linguistic and cross-cultural perspectives in language rehabilitation

  • Development and application of digital and culturally adaptive tools for clinical assessment and intervention

‘치매’라는 단어는 이제 많은 사람들에게 익숙하다. 반면 ‘실어증(Aphasia)’은 비교적 낯설고, 들어본 적은 있어도 치매와 어떻게 다른지, 어떤 증상을 말하는 것인지 선뜻 설명하기 어려운 용어일 수 있다. ‘실어증(失語症)’이라는 한자어를 들여다보면, 다소 무겁고 무시무시한 뜻을 담고 있다. 말 그대로 언어를 잃어버리는 증상이라는 의미다. 영어 용어인 ‘Aphasia’ 역시 비슷하다. 접두사 ‘a-’는 ‘없다’를 의미하고, ‘phasis’는 ‘말’을 뜻하는 그리스어에서 유래했다. 결국 실어증은 ‘말을 할 수 없는 상태’를 내포한다. 그렇다면 실어증 환자들은 정말 언어를 완전히 상실한 것일까? 언어를 잃어버린다면 다시 회복하는 것이 가능할까? 바로 이러한 질문이 언어재활의 핵심이다. 출처 : 이대학보(https://inews.ewha.ac.kr)
