‘치매’라는 단어는 이제 많은 사람들에게 익숙하다. 반면 ‘실어증(Aphasia)’은 비교 적 낯설고, 들어본 적은 있어도 치매와 어떻게 다른지, 어떤 증상을 말하는 것인지 선뜻 설명하기 어려운 용어일 수 있다. ‘실어증(失語症)’이라는 한자어를 들여다보면, 다소 무겁고 무시무시한 뜻을 담고 있다. 말 그대로 언어를 잃어버리는 증상이라는 의미다. 영어 용어인 ‘Aphasia’ 역시 비슷하다. 접두사 ‘a-’는 ‘없다’를 의미하고, ‘phasis’는 ‘말’을 뜻하는 그리스어에서 유래했다. 결국 실어증은 ‘말을 할 수 없는 상태’를 내포한다. 그렇다면 실어증 환자들은 정말 언어를 완전히 상실한 것일까? 언어를 잃어버린다면 다시 회복하는 것이 가능할까? 바로 이러한 질문이 언어재활의 핵심이다. 출처 : 이대학보(https://inews.ewha.ac.kr)
