NABLe Lab’s Visit to KBSI MRI Center

On April 7, 2025, Professor Jee Eun Sung and members of the NABLe research team visited the MRI Center at the Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) in Ochang.

During the visit, Dr. Sukhoon Oh, Principal Researcher of the MRI Translational Imaging Research Group at KBSI, delivered a special lecture titled “Understanding MRI Principles (+ Understanding fMRI Principles)” for NABLe researchers. Starting from fundamental scientific concepts, Dr. Oh provided a clear and accessible explanation of the core mechanisms of MRI and fMRI, which greatly enhanced the researchers' confidence in conducting future fMRI studies.

Following the lecture, the team had the rare opportunity to tour the 7T MRI system, one of only three in Korea and approximately 100 worldwide. They also experienced the effects of a high-strength magnetic field and participated in a hands-on session using a Philips 3T MRI scanner. As part of the demonstration, Professor Jee Eun Sung and Ph.D. student Bora Eom volunteered for brain scans. Professor Sung was especially pleased to obtain high-resolution anatomical images that she could use as teaching material in her neuroscience classes.

We are excited to move forward with our fMRI research at NABLe, inspired by this insightful and hands-on experience.

2025년 4월 7일(월), 성지은 교수님과 NABLe 연구원들이 한국기초과학지원연구원(KBSI) 오창센터 내 MRI센터를 방문하였습니다.

이번 방문에서는 KBSI MRI 이미징중개연구그룹의 책임연구원이신 오석훈 박사님께서, “알기 쉬운 MRI 원리 (+알기 쉬운 fMRI 원리)”라는 주제로 NABLe 연구원들을 대상으로 특강을 진행해주셨습니다. 기초적인 과학 원리부터 시작하여 MRI 및 fMRI의 핵심 개념을 누구나 이해할 수 있도록 명확하게 설명해 주셔서, 특강에 참석한 연구원들 모두 fMRI 연구에 대한 자신감을 얻을 수 있는 뜻깊은 시간이었습니다.

강의 후에는 전 세계에 약 100여 대, 국내에는 3대만 존재하는 7T MRI 장비를 직접 둘러보며, 고자장 자기장 환경도 체험해보는 기회를 가졌습니다. 이와 함께, PHILIPS사의 3T MRI 장비를 활용한 실습도 진행되었으며, 성지은 교수님과 엄보라 박사과정 선생님께서 뇌 영상 촬영에 직접 참여하셨습니다. 교수님께서는 해부학 수업에서 활용할 수 있는 실제 뇌 영상 자료를 얻게 되어 매우 기뻐하셨습니다.
